You might have noticed some changes to our website. Big ones! To be specific, our organization is no longer calling itself "Hearthmakers Energy Cooperative", the name we've carried since our establishment way back in 1999. Last year, Hearthmakers' board of directors felt it was time to change the company's corporate name and legal status to better reflect the organization we had evolved into over the years. They then began the slow and bureaucratic process of reincorporating as a nonprofit corporation (as opposed to a cooperative) and changing our legal name to something newer and fresher.
After much discussion and brainstorming, the moniker we came up with was Red Squirrel Conservation Services. We liked it because we're in the conservation business -- and squirrels are busy little critters who spend their lives conserving (i.e. saving) things like the nuts and seeds they stash away for the winter. Although they might not realize it, squirrels plan for the future. We help people do the same by showing them how to keep their homes more comfortable, their basements drier, and their utility bills lower. We liked the name because it's sort of fun, and not too corporate-sounding.
In short, our new handle is different, just as we are. We're different because, unlike some other firms that offer services similar to ours, we do not exist solely to make a profit for shareholders. We exist to serve people and make the world a better place. Every penny we earn goes right back into making our programs and services better.
So welcome to Red Squirrel, Kingston's energy and water conservation experts. We hope to meet you some day, if we haven't already.
