How do I qualify for a rebate?

What can I get a rebate for?
You can get a rebate to offset the costs of insulating basements, walls and attics. Air sealing is also eligible for a rebate.
Basement Insulation -- see notes (1), (2), and (3)
$1250 -- For adding at least R23 to 100% of basement
$750 -- For adding at least R12 to 100% of basement
$1000 -- For adding at least R23 to 100% of crawl space wall
$500 -- For adding at least R10 to 100% of crawl space wall
$500 -- For adding at least R24 to 100% of floor above crawl space
Exterior wall Insulation (1)
$1,750 -- Add at least R9 for 100% of building to achieve a minimum of R12.
$1,250 -- Add at least R3.8 for 100% of building to achieve a minimum of R12.
Attic Insulation (4)
$500-- For increasing attic insulation to at least R50 from R12 or less.
$250 -- For increasing attic insulation to at least R50 from R13 to R25.
$500 -- For increasing cathedral/flat roof insulation by at least R14.
Air Sealing
$150 -- Achieve 10% or more above base target
$100 -- Achieve base target
(1) The rebate is prorated based on the percentage of wall area insulated and does not include walls between individual units. For a semi-detached, rebates are 75 percent of the amounts shown.
(2) When both a basement and crawl space are present, all applicable grants are pro-rated to a maximum of $1,000 based on the total wall area.
(3) Can qualify for either crawl space wall or floor above crawl space rebate.
(4) To qualify for a rebate, you must insulate a minimum of 20% of the total ceiling area. When the roof consists of more than one type and/or sections (i.e., any combination of attic, cathedral ceiling and flat roof), rebates are pro-rated based on the percentage of the upgraded ceiling area. The rebate for any combination of attic, cathedral ceiling and flat roof cannot exceed $500.
Can I get any Energy Star® rebates through this program?
Yes! You can get a rebate if you install:
Furnace/Boiler
$1000 for replacing a 94% AFUE or less natural gas, propane or oil furnace with a 95% or higher condensing natural gas, propane or oil furnace,
OR
for replacing a 89% AFUE or less natural gas, propane or oil boiler with a 90% AFUE or higher condensing natural gas, propane or oil boiler.
Note: A combi system qualifies as a boiler and is eligible for the rebate. (4)
Electrically heated homes are not eligible. Your home's primary heating source needs to be natural gas, propane, or oil furnace.
Wood-Burning System
$375 for replacing a wood-burning system or appliance with one of the following:

For replacing a solid-fuel-fired outdoor boiler with an outdoor wood-burning appliance certified to either CAN/CSA-B415.1 or EPA Outdoor wood-fired Hydronic Heater (OWHH Method 28) Program (Phase 1 and 2). The capacity of the new equipment must be equal to or smaller than the capacity of the boiler being replaced.
Note: To qualify for a wood-burning stove rebate, your home's primary heating source needs to be a wood-burning system.
Water Heater -- see note (5)
$500 for replacing a water heater with an ENERGY STAR natural gas water heater
Note: A combi/combo system qualifies as a water heater and is eligible for the rebate (5).
Electric water heaters do not qualify for the rebate.
Windows/Doors/Skylights -- see note (6)
$80 for each window, door or skylight replaced with an ENERGY STAR-qualified model.
(4,5) A combi or combo system CANNOT qualify for both the space-heating boiler rebate and the domestic hot water rebate; it counts as one measure.
(6) $80 rebate per rough opening (e.g., a bay window is considered as one rough opening).

How do I get started?
- Contact Red Squirrel BEFORE starting your renovations to book an energy audit. (Call 613-547-8122 or use our online audit booking form.) If you start installing your retrofits before getting an audit, you will not qualify for the rebate.
- Book and complete your pre-renovation energy assessment with one of our Registered Energy Advisors.
- Review your assessment and renovation options with your energy advisor.
- Complete at least two of the eligible renovations with a reputable contractor*.
- Call your advisor to complete your post-renovation assessment.
Red Squirrel will collect and submit all the necessary paperwork to Union Gas. You will get your rebate cheque within 90 business days of submission.

How do I qualify for a rebate?
You need to:
- Have an active Union Gas account.
- If you live in central Kingston, your gas service is provided by Utilities Kingston. To qualify for the rebate, you will need to show a tax bill to show that you own the property. If you own a property but live somewhere else, you will need to show a tax bill and proof (e.g., a utility bill or driver's license) that you live at the address where Union Gas will be mailing your rebate cheque.
- Use a natural gas/oil or propane furnace/boiler or wood stove as your primary heating source.
- Own a detached, semi-detached home, or townhouse.
And you must:
- Do an energy assessment both before and after your renovation. Red Squirrel charges $350 for the first (pre-reno) assessment and $175 for the second (post-reno) assessment.
- Complete at least two eligible renovations.

- An indoor pellet-burning appliance (includes stoves, furnaces and boilers that burn wood, corn, grain or cherry pits).
- An indoor masonry heater.
OR
For replacing a solid-fuel-fired outdoor boiler with an outdoor wood-burning appliance certified to either CAN/CSA-B415.1 or EPA Outdoor wood-fired Hydronic Heater (OWHH Method 28) Program (Phase 1 and 2).
